Hair needs as much care as the skin for it to look healthy, strong and lustrous. Your hair also demands proper cleansing, toning and conditioning routine just like your skin. Each individual’s hair type is different, normal, dry and oily. As it is the most delicate and susceptible to easy damage due to pollution and dirt, frequent straitening, coloring and streaking, special care and attention is prime.

Scalp care
Scalp is nothing but the skin on the skull. It tends to get oily or dry depending on the individual’s body constitution. Excess oil and clogging of pores needs to be treated for proper hair growth and lessening hair fall . Dandruff is another common problem seen on the scalp mainly caused due to dust and dirt settled on the scalp, when exposed to pollution. This is when cleansing and conditioning routines need to b followed.
Shikakai, reetha (soap nuts), hibiscus leaves are excellent natural cleansers without harmful chemicals that effect hair. Regular oils massage to the scalp helps strengthen hair follicles making it strong and healthy. Warm two tsp of olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil, dab on a cotton pad, apply on the scalp, cover with a shower cap for 30 minutes and wash with a mild shampoo, preferably with natural ingredients. Mix in two eggs, lime juice, yoghurt and apply over scalp before washing hair. Provides nourishment to the scalp and roots.
Shampoo & Conditioning
- Choose shampoo that suits your hair type.
- Before shampooing, wet hair, take two spoonfuls of shampoo, mix it in some amount of water, combine the two well and wash your hair. Some shampoos may be strong in chemicals that harm the hair; this is a best way to dilute strong shampoos.
- Shikakai, amla and soap nuts are natural cleansers.
- Lime based shampoos are apt for oily hair while egg based shampoos are suitable for dry hair.
- Massage the scalp gently with the shampoo and work towards the rest of the hair. Make sure that you are not too rough on the hair; this might result in tearing.
- It is not necessary to shampoo twice, once the lather is thick, it is sufficient.
- Rinse well and make sure that there is no residue of the shampoo, this will make the scalp dry and itchy, might result in dandruff in some cases.
- Conditioning is important as it softens the hair after shampooing.
- A final rinse with a glass of beer gives shine, smoothness and bounce to the hair.
- Henna is an excellent hair conditioner. Mix in three teaspoons of henna with one egg yolk, spoonful of yoghurt, tea decoction, half lime and olive oil, let it stay overnight and apply it on the scalp and hair before 45 minutes of hair wash. This works wonders for hair growth, conditioning and stops hair fall.
- Amla, shikakai and yoghurt is a good hair conditioner.
- Leave in conditioners are excellent for dry brittle hair. Do not use conditioner on the scalp; use it only on the hair.
- Rotate various shampoos and conditioners that suit your hair type, hair responds well to slight change.
Combing & Brushing
- Use wooden, spaced brushes or combs. Avoid using plastic and hard brushes, these damage and result in hair fall.
- Do not comb wet hair, as hair is most delicate after it is washed and is easily breakable.
- Brush from top to bottom along the length of the hair slowly. Do not be rough and rigorous and tangle the hair.
