Obesity is a common disease these days. It is increasingly affecting people of all age groups. Today’s unhealthy life style is one of the major causes of obesity. Junk food has replaced healthy diets. Food rich in fat, sugar, protein, spices and carbohydrate look more appealing to our eyes. There are so many excellent snacks available the moment we step out of our homes that it is difficult to control our taste buds. We tend to overeat. We simply forget that consumption of anything in excess is harmful to our bodies.

Thanks to the inventions made in the recent years we can do our daily chores in minutes and spend hours in entertainment just by the click of a few buttons. Television, computers, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, and mixer grinders…the list is endless; prevent us from using our body in a manner, which would help in preventing obesity. We are becoming lazy day by day. Instead of walking we prefer driving even to the shortest distance. Time has become important. But in this competitive world we are loosing out in the health sphere.

Digestive disorders, improper functioning of endocrine gland, hereditary factors and problem in the nervous system also cause obesity in many people.

Home Remedies for Obesity

We have options of a number of remedies but ayurvedic remedies to combat obesity is the best one. In the recent past this ancient healthcare system of India have given positive results. It involves very inexpensive methods of treatment and it believes in the harmony of the body and environment. Special diets, exercise and yoga are the medications prescribed by this science of living. It suggests that we should eat everything in moderation. Our daily life should consist of a plenty of physical activities, long walks, proper sleep and body massage.

Apart from non- fatty and food rich in fibers, ayurveda preaches the regular intake of limejuice and honey mixed together in water with a pinch of black pepper powder. Guggul – a plant extract remedy is also advised to be taken with ginger and honey everyday. Honey, lemon, guggul, black pepper, mint, ginger, cinnamon and trifala- a combination of 3 herbs; haritaki, bibbitaki and amalaki are beneficial for weight reduction. Chilled water, cold drinks and food eaten straight out of the refrigerator should be avoided. Ayurveda advises to drink boiled water after every meal. If it is difficult to live without cold water then try to drink it an hour or two before the mealtime. Restrained diet would definitely bring good results.

Yoga, also known as the ‘sister science’ of ayurveda is good not only for obesity but other diseases too. It helps in controlling food habits and makes the body efficient and slim. Asanas like halasana, paschimotamsana, sarvangasana, saral hasta bhujangasana, ardhamatsyendrasana, trikonasana, bhanurasana and veerasana have proved successful in reduction of obesity. Sun salutations and pranayams are helpful too.
