Common Cold Cure Information

‘The common cold’ as we know it, is an ailment which obviously has no effective remedies, but through this study we attempt at finding out how it can be avoided and what are the alternative treatments that exist. Our common cold is a viral infection that spreads in the upper respiratory system. It causes sore throat, running noses, sneezing, headache, dry cough, etc. It is an ailment that is short in duration, less than two weeks at the most. One must remember that common cold is highly contagious that is why children are more often affected by it since they lack the power to resist outside infection. The best way to prevent colds is by hand washing and using disinfectants regularly.

To treat the ‘common cold’ doctor’s advice plenty of bed rest, intake of fluids, gargling with warm salt water and applying of petroleum jelly on a raw nose. Apart from these common methods, some alternative treatments have been advocated for the treatment of the same. These methods include Ayurveda, and Yoga.

Ayurveda is one of the popular ways of treating common cold. Its, natural medicines have no side effects. The holy herb Tulsi is useful in treating respiratory system disorder. Vasak treats bronchitis effectively; it clears thick sputum and helps in easy breathing. Ginger prevents antibacterial and allergic infection in sore throats and respiratory organs.

Some simple Ayurvedic remedies to keep away the common cold:

A glass of warm water with some lemon juice and honey keep away cough & cold.

For dry cough particularly during night, take dry ginger, cardamom, cinnamon and black pepper in equal proportions, about 10gms each.

For Laryngitis and hacking cough: mix equal parts of honey and juice of baked lemon, (i.e. sour citrus fruit) or 10 -15 drops of betel leaf juice with honey thrice a day.

A decoction of Tulsi leaves along with ginger and honey is a remedy for influenza, cough and cold. A decoction of the leaves with cloves and common salt also gives great relief in case of influenza.

The Yogic Lifestyle is another alternative therapy for ‘common cold’ it deals with an all round development and prevents cold and boosts the immune system. Exercises in the form of Asanas make the body healthier. Deep breathing techniques or Pranayama helps absorb more oxygen into the lungs, which control colds, allergies & asthma. The practice of Kapalabhati Pranayama clears the nasal passage giving relief from sinus headache, cold and migraine. The best way to combat a disease is to prevent it, hence a regular follow up of all these methods which have been proven, are a sure way of keeping the common cold at bay.
